Modern carnivals in Florianópolis originate in the 19th century; however, it has been around for much longer. At the beginning of the 20th century, while the elite attended galas in closed events, the population of the lower strata began to celebrate in the streets, particularly the afrodescendants who generally lived far from the noble area of the city. It was these sectors that became the protagonists of the party with the blocos and from the 1950s, with the first samba schools.
Over time, the parties were transformed; the parades were becoming more and more organized, the competition was becoming fiercer for the schools and the parties were becoming more and more popular. Over the years, the pasarela Samba Nego Quirido was built to give space to the official groups, while the blocos grew and continued the party in the city center and in the neighborhoods. New events were also integrated such as the “Pop Gay” which has become the tradition and a milestone of diversity in the period of the festivities.
The Florianópolis Carnival, although consolidated, still suffers from funding problems due to dependence on the government, which led to the cancellation of the samba school parades in 2013. However, it is estimated that in 2016 alone, more than one million people passed through the Florianópolis Carnival events, with 300,000 tourists injecting money into the economy.
