What is the Carnival of Ambato?

.
The Ambato Carnival, also known as the Carnival of the Fruit and Flowers, is one of the largest celebrations in the city. This carnival promotes and encourages the regional production of the products found in the town, which as its name suggests, consists of a variety of flowers and fruits.

The highlight of the celebration is the parade of dozens of floats that come decorated with different seeds, flowers, fruits and some bread. Likewise, the floats carry consigor different messages of awareness and are accompanied by comparsas and folkloric groups, both national and international. The floats feature a decoration of various products produced by the city, some of these among corn, roses, chrysanthemums, plums, lemons or tangerines, as well as seeds and bread, turning the floats into an agricultural exhibition of the city.

Today the celebration is considered Intangible Heritage of the Andean Region and has around 150,000 visitors each year, hoping that each year the number will rise to continue contributing to the development of the festivities and production at the regional level of the different items.

The carnival emerged as a way to cope with the situation carried out by the earthquake that shook the city onAugust 5, 1949, since some sectors and areas of the city were destroyed. The first carnival celebration was held in 1951 taking as its main point the production of flowers, fruit, art and the traditions of the city, also including the different traditions and cultural aspects of the city. The mechanics and elements of the celebration were maintained and the carnival continued to develop, until in 1962 a committee was created for the commission and administration of the festivities, since that same year the festivities were declared a national celebration.

The celebration continued to grow, integrating over time new elements to the festivities to encourage participation and visits from other sectors of the city. Today, the carnival has grown in such a way that it has become an indispensable part of the city’s culture and traditions.
