What is Lake Charles Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras in Lake Charles is a carnival celebration held every year in southwest Louisiana. Today it is recognized as the second largest celebration in the state.

This celebration involves the society and has a preferential focus on family activities and the development of the union of the differents communities that are in the city. The festivities have the particularity of having several community activities and activities for children, as well as the different parades that take place in different points of the city. Mardi Gras arrived in theUnited States in 1699 thanks to a French-Canadian explorer named Pierre Le Moyne, Sieur d’Iberville. In 1703 the various French soldiers and settlers, who were settled in some regions of the state of Louisiana, began to celebrate Mardi Gras continuously and 100 years later it was consolidated as a tradition.

The first Mardi Gras in Lake Charles dates back to 1882, when celebrations were held in the adjacent river of the city. The festivities were held continuously until World War I, when it almost became completely extinct, with the exception of some celebrations that were held almost secretly and in private places.



In 1964 the celebration arose again. However, it did not acquire a full renaissance until 1979, when the “Krewe of Krewe” began to be held for the purpose of holding a main attraction, in this case the Grand Parade. Since then, theMardi Gras in Lake Charles has continued to develop and integrate elements over the years.
