What is Baklahorani Carnival?

The Baklahorani Carnival, also known as theTatavla Carnival, is a celebration of the multicultural communities of the city of Istanbul that began as a Christian Lenten tradition. Despite having an important culture, this celebration ceased to be held after the banning of masks in 1943. However, this celebration came back to life in 2010 after this law was lifted. The 2010 celebration was held in a modest way for security reasons, but they were the beginning of future celebrations much more joyful and strengthened.

For centuries, the local Greek communities of Istanbul celebrated Carnival with weeks of extravagant parades, dances and street parties. Despite being solely run by the Greek Orthodox community, the celebrations were public and intercommunal. The feasts were generally held in the districts of Kurtuluo, Galata and Pera.

History of the Baklahorani Carnivals

.
The roots of Baklahorani go back to the early 19th century, when theGreek and Armenian communities of the city would gather and celebrate during the weeks leading up to Carnival Monday and thebeginning of Lent. The Baklahorani Carnival celebrations took place in Istanbul where they were considered as unique and diverse as the city itself. The events featured different Christian communities marching in masked parades, while dancing and playing music. However, during the 1940s the use of masks was banned and as a result the Carnival of Tatavla came to an end.

Not since the ban had the Baklhorani carnivals been held in Istanbul, until this law was finally lifted in 2010 in an effort to showcase the religious diversity and multiculturalism of the city. From that year on, members of the Greek and Armenian Christian community revived the celebrations and in 2010 held the first celebration after decades of prohibition.

The largest celebrations took place on the main square in front of the historicHagia Dimitri Church. Although the event was mainly initiated bylocal Greeks, it soon developed into a festival bringing together people from various neighborhoods and diverse religious, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The carnival reached its peak around the First World War.

?
After a ban on the wearing of masks led to the suspension of the Baklahorani carnival, the festivities are held in Istanbul Turkey. There the participants celebrate with a parade of masks.

How the Baklahorani Carnival is celebrated

.
In the old days, a mask parade was held in which folk dances were sung and danced to the accompaniment of various traditional instruments, such as drum, zurna (a wind instrument), clarinet and mandolin. Residents of the various localities such as Bakerkiy, Samatya, Fener, Balat would cross the Golden Horn, 7.5-kilometer-high and 750-meter-wide estuary, across the Galata Bridge and Unkapanah. They would then come to dance in the square in front of theSaint Demetrius Church in Kurtuluş. In addition, several people from theBosphorus, Ili, Kemerburgaz neighborhoods would gather in front of the Pangalta Catholic Cemetery and march down the main street to the same square, where the celebrations culminated.

Today it is celebrated in a more or less similar way, but in a slightly more modest way. Today a small parade is held in various locations in the Şişli district of the city where a group of people parade through the streets. Some men cover their faces with flour, while others paint it black.

Theuse of masks is essential and some young people wear the Fustanella, a type of Greek skirt or dress. People are also seen wearing dresses with different themes such as bandits or doctors. Fortunately, the celebrations are gaining more and more strength in an attempt to return to the form and magnitude it had just under 100 years ago. At the end of the parade, there is celebration with food and drink, live music and a performance by Laterna. Other smaller events will be held in different parts of the town for several weeks.
