What is the Wells Carnival?

The Wells Carnival is a celebration that occurs every year and is considered a regional celebration. These carnivals are famous for being the brightest and most illuminated carnivals in the world. Here, clubs and groups get together and put on a show for the public with their decorated floats, costumes, routines dance routines, music and much more. The main attraction is the parade of themed trucks that make their way through the district, lighting up the streets of the various localities on certain dates. Some carts cost more than 40,000 euros and are the result of thousands of hours of work throughout the year. These trucks are filled with lights and decorated with a theme of your choice.

The parade of floats has dozens of trucks full of lights, decorated and with people in costumes. The trucks are imposing machines that can reach twenty meters long, some are 3 or 4 meters wide and about 5 meters high. The floats are accompanied by music and various shows.

Wells Carnival History

.
The carnival has a beginning dating back to 1605 and is based on the concept of the Bonfire Night, associated with the character Guy Fawkes, a member of a Catholic providential group. This person is one of the characters who stood out in the attemptedburning of parliament in 1604. The beginnings of the carnival were celebrated through large bonfires that took place in the different localities.

During the early years of carnival, people celebrated with lamps, then began to use electric lights and today the carnival has adapted to the times, has been modernized and no longer have the weight and religious importance it had centuries ago. Today it is carried out through the big characteristic trucks illuminated by hundreds of thousands of bombillos and decorated following a specific theme.

This is a celebration that was spreading throughout the municipality. Thus, the trucks start their journey through Bridgwater, then head to the rest of the towns such as Burnham on Sea, Weston-super-Mare,North Petherton, Midsomer Norton, Shepton Mallet, Wells and Glastonbury. The total tour takes about 15 days, as every other day it arrives at a different location.
