What is the Tilburg Carnival?

During the festivities, Tilburg will be transformed into ‘Kruikenstad’. The Tilburg Carnival is one of the biggest events in the city. In the carnival season, the city of Tilburg is decorated in the characteristic colors of its carnival, orange and green. The celebrations in the city last for 5 consecutive days, during which a wide variety of activities take place. In each of the bars and restaurants, you can find a party. In addition, there is music and celebration in every corner of the city.

In the carnival celebrations you can witness a lot of ceremonies that are part of a long historical tradition for the city. Some of these are the giving of the key to the Prince of Carnival, giving him symbolic control over Tilburg, as well as activities that are performed by the prince himself and his corcorcorse. The Carnival associations are also an important part of this celebration as they hold parties and ceremonies within the city.

People dress up in their crazy costumes to party in the streets and take part in parades with carriages, lights and decorations. The number eleven also makes its presence felt at the festivities, as the vast majority of activities start at exactly 11.11 a.m. Likewise, the Prince has his own Council of Eleven.

History of the Tilburg Carnivals

.
The Tilburg Carnival has been celebrated for a long time, so it is difficult to determine when exactly it started. These celebrations have their own past and a very characteristic history compared to other cities.

Carnival has been celebrated for centuries in Lower Countries and for a long time was controversial in the eyes of the authorities and the church, even for the city of Tilburg. During the 19th century carnivals had come to be banned due to a series of riots generated by some local youths, these rebelled against the church because they were not allowed to dress up, dance or parade through the streets. Then, the city council followed the church and banned the carnival from being celebrated in public, being celebrated only privately during Carnival Tuesday. Associations joined forces against the measures and carnival clubs were created.

After 100 years, in 1957 to be exact, the first children’s parade was held, which came to circulate in various sectors of the city. In 1960 a more urban event was sought, giving birth to the “Tilburg Children’s Carnival Association” and so it was that in 1960 Tilburg awarded a permit for a children’s parade through the center of the city. The children’s carnival celebration was gaining more traction, to such an extent that there was an insistence on expanding the celebrations and re-incorporating the traditional carnivals.

Finally, in February 1965, Tilburg issued a permit for a parade ofyouth and adults through the city center. This took place on Sunday, February 28, 1965 and was considered a success. Since then, the carnival evolved and acquired all those elements that today characterize the carnivals in the city of Tilburg..
