History of the Copenhagen Carnivals

.

The beginning

.
The Copenhagen Carnival was born thanks to the inspiration of theWest Indies carnivals, due to some characters who had visited the islands and returned to Denmark with the idea of carrying out a celebration that looked like it. In 1981, money raising took place to materialize the project of the carnivals, including carnival organizations and training. Finally, the project materialized the following year.

In 1982 the first carnivals were held and were a great success. The carnival organizers tried to secure the economy of the event by organizing evening parties in the city of Ramersgade, as the deficit was about 50,000 Danish kroner. The first Copenhagen carnival parade was attended by more than 60,000 people.

The 1983 edition was a complete success, as it had a generous contribution from the government, which allowed the organizationto bring in various international artists. In addition, the carnival began to make way for carriages during the parade and to includemusical instruments such as the traditional steel drums of Trinidad and Tobago. In addition, the carnival organization began a new process of research on other carnivals in the world, especially those in Brazil, so a process of incorporating new carnival elements began.

Breaking

.
During the rest of the 1980s, the carnival began to show heavy losses and economic deficit, which forced the reduction of events and the carnival parade. Shortly thereafter, the carnival association was declared bankrupt, which caused new people to take control of the institution. In the early 1990s, theCopenhagen National Carnival Association was founded, which included a wide range of organizations such as samba schools, carnival groups and othercultural institutions. This year’s parade was run in a modest way with thecollaboration of the schools and organizations.

A new beginning in Fælledparken

.
In 1995 the carnival is held for the first time in Fælledparken, which was held during a rainy day with the participation of various musical groups and samba schools. In addition, different youth organizations were included. The carnival began to become a family event without so much pomposity, attracting an audience in the late 1990s. Also, several international groups participated, including orchestras and soloists, positioning the carnival as one of the largest music festivals in the world.

Bigger than ever

.
The carnivals continued to be held at the Fælledparken during the turn of the century, inviting diverseartists, samba schools and groups from all over the world. In addition, new elements such aschildren’s carnival and electronic music are incorporated along with various genres of world music. By 2003, the carnival was already welcoming some 100,000 people each year and had the participation of 300 volunteers and a substantial economic fund.

Back to the beginning

.
During 2012, the carnival facilities were ransacked, resulting in the theft of all entertainment equipment. This caused the carnival to be held at another location for the first time in many years. In addition to this, the organization was again forced to declare bankruptcy, giving way again to a new organization that took control of the event from that year onwards.

The following years were quite turbulent for the organization and the carnivals, as people did not attend the event due to the high ticket prices. Due to the low turnout, the carnivals lost their luster, making the event quite humble and only had a music tent and a few DJs to entertain the parties. All this caused the organization to need the help of the samba schools and groups, which were once again integrated into the carnival festivities.

The Recovery

.
The carnival underwent major substantive changes and a new restructuring of the association. The carnival returned to its humble beginnings which allowed it to take up new actions and manage events more efficiently. Over the next few years, some presentations and parades were held with the inclusion of groups and samba schools and after several years, finally the carnival began to see large numbers of participants. For 2018, the carnivals have been showing a successful recovery, even leaving a profit of DKK 40,000.

The carnival continues to improve and be carried out in a better way without excluding themulticultural and entertainment elements it was originally born with. Today, the carnivals have a large participation, positioning itself as one of the largest carnivals and music festivals in the country.
