History of the Santa Chiara Masked Ball

.

Chiesa di Santa Chiara

.
The church of Santa Chiara was part of a monastic complex that has been officially documented as an Augustinian convent, named after San Nicola della Torre in 1311. Around the 14th century, the Augustinian monks were succeeded by theBenedictine nuns. These in turn, were replaced by the Franciscan nuns of Santa Chiara due to scandalous behavior. The Franciscan nuns of Santa Chiara were the ones who gave the church its name and also began the restoration of the church in the early 16th century.

In 1826, a company bought the state ownership of the church and the convent was converted into a building for the production of wine bottles, window panes and glass bells. During the last years of the 19th century, Baron Franchetti took over the glassworks and the church of Santa Chiara was restored and divided into two floors inside.

In the mid-twentieth century the building changed ownership, who built two floors leaning against the rear facade of the church which was completed shortly thereafter. From 1968 onwards, numerous property divisions take place. However, the abandonment and underutilization of the oldest part of the Santa Chiara area causes in a few years a serious degradation of the architectural heritage, as well as a further parcelling of the property. During 2012, a major remodeling project of the structure was started.

.
Today, the current owners of the building first visited the church in 2011. Seeing the state the church was in, they decided to implement a plan to restore the building and contribute to the historical preservation of the city. In turn, their intentions were to create a place where they could hold world-class events in Venice to encourage tourism in the city and the area.

The owners of the church are a Venetian family who worked tirelessly for 4 years to adapt the structure and turn it into an event hall. In addition, the family has more than 30 years of experience in tourism, so their intention from the beginning had been to use the building to stimulate the industry in the area.

Today, the church is known as the Crystal Cathedral and is the meeting point for dozens of extraordinary and thematic events that create unforgettable experiences for those who visit it.
